Land acknowledgement
In the spirit of reconciliation and truth, the Springbank Off-stream Reservoir (SR1) Project team acknowledges that the project is located within the traditional territory of Treaty 7, and within the historical Métis homeland. We respectfully acknowledge the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy, including the Siksika, Piikani and Kainai Nations; the Stoney-Nakoda, including the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Wesley Nations; and the Tsuut’ina Nation. We also acknowledge the homeland of the Métis Nation of Alberta Region 3.
We acknowledge the past, present, and future generations who steward this land. We recognize that Indigenous Peoples from many cultures call this place home and we welcome and respect all unique cultures and traditions.

Indigenous engagement
Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) developed an Indigenous Participation Plan (IPP) to encourage and support initiatives for Indigenous participation on the project. Indigenous employment, training, and building business capacity are the primary goals of the IPP. Therefore, open and direct communication will continue throughout the construction of the project. VINCI Construction Infrastructure Canada Limited (VIC)‘s community liaison, is the primary point of contact for the projects’ rights holders and indigenous stakeholders interested in subcontracting opportunities. He can be contacted by using the contact section of this website.
TEC is committed to working with Indigenous Nations and groups, as they are fundamental to the development of the IPP. Prior to construction, Indigenous Nations and groups were consulted on SR1 as rights holders and major stakeholders.
As per TEC and IPP, the primary Indigenous Nations and groups of focus are:
- Treaty 7 First Nations – Tsuut’ina Nation, Blood Tribe/Kainai, Piikani Nation, Siksika Nation, Stoney Nakoda comprised of the Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Good Stoney First Nations,
- Treaty 6 First Nations – Ermineskin Cree Nation, Louis Bull Tribe, Montana First Nation, and Samson Cree Nation,
- Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.
As a continuation to the work previously conducted by TEC, SR1 team is committed to establishing and maintaining mutually respectful and meaningful relationships between Indigenous Nations and groups, our clients, and our organization. We encourage and support Indigenous economic participation throughout our projects and operations. As the prime contractor on SR1, VINCI Construction Infrastructure Canada Limited (VIC) will continue TEC’s commitment to building and maintaining sustainable, long-term relationships with Indigenous Nations, Governments, groups, and businesses.
Cultural awareness
SR1 team believes that our differences should be respected and celebrated.
SR1 team provides cultural awareness training sessions for all project personnel. This will aid in fostering and maintaining an inclusive environment in which all project personnel:
- understand, value, and respect each other’s differences,
- create awareness and understanding,
- allow all project personnel to understand their individual and collective roles, and
- provide the foundation for cultural competency.
SR1 team also provides similar information within our project orientation for all project workers and contractors. SR1 team encourages all personnel and contractors to participate in cultural celebrations with local and Indigenous nations, governments, and groups.
